SUMMARY:Dai Kan (Big Cold) protocols of Yoshimasu Todo
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we will dive into a magnificent Japanese classical text called Shindo Happi Kogi\, written by Yoshimasu Todo and commented on by Yokota Kanpu Sensei. One of the first chapters of this text is about the Dai Kan (big cold) protocols. Dai Kan summarizes the classic\, thin\, stringy-shouldered\, female patient (think Reynaud’s syndrome) that many of us see in clinics on a frequent basis. We will take this theory and then apply our Oshide\, Needle-top Moxa\, and Chinetsu Kyu to treat.

SUMMARY:Needle-top Moxa vs Chinetsu Kyu
DESCRIPTION:In this class we will dive deep into a fundamental difference between TCM and Japanese moxibustion\, using moxa not only for tonification but also for dispersion. Most of you learned how to do needle top moxa in school\, but for this class I will dial in when you use it and when you should use Chinetsu Kyu instead. This will be a hands-on class so please bring a brand of moxa similar to the quality of Wakakusa moxa\, a magnetic pie sheet from your kitchen\, some tissues\, and some magnets. To practice needle top I suggest having a piece of a friend (or yourself). This class will build upon the first resource of ‘Oshide and Japanese Needling Technique’ and continue to be technically utilized in the third resource of the series entitled Dai Kan (Big Cold) protocols of Yoshimasu Todo.

SUMMARY:Oshide and Japanese Needling Technique
DESCRIPTION:The role of the Oshide (guide hand) in Japanese acupuncture needling is profound and cannot be ignored.\nDespite the style of needling it is universally used and universally accepted as the proper way to stabilize the needle shaft\, reduce pain on insertion and during manipulation\, and the best way to connect to the needle to transmit ki and read the patient’s ki. In this hands-on lecture\, I will start to break down the role of the Oshide and how you can start incorporating it into your practice to have a gentler and more effective session for your patients. This class is also foundational to further study with advanced Japanese-trained practitioners. We will cover 3 pivotal needle techniques during this class including Nenshin (drill technique)\, Okurikomi (lifting and thrusting)\, and Guide Tube Tap-in\, and how they differ during treatment. \nPlease bring several pieces of fruit a large mixing bowl filled with water to the brim\, and a few 20×50 needles to practice this technique together during the class.

SUMMARY:Geometric Point Patterns\, Great Sweeping Motions and Formulas with Keren Sela
DESCRIPTION:My teacher Dr Yi Tian Ni\, was the first to introduce me to Woman’s Health and Gynecology in CM. She was an expert herbalist and acupuncturist. Geometric patterns in acupuncture is just one of her teachings that has has impacted my needling style over the past 22 years. In this class I would like to: \n\nIntroduce the 7 main types of patterns\, explain their use and give examples\nDiscuss my thoughts on the parallel of certain geometric patterns with certain Great Sweeping Motions and give formula examples\nDescribe a case from clinic that incorporates geometrical pattern acupuncture with a matching formula.\n\nI  hope this information will be both clinically useful and thought provoking

SUMMARY:Saam Acupuncture: Deconstructing Point Combinations (5 Week Course)
DESCRIPTION:In this class we will move beyond the standard four-point combinations and begin to explore the use of deconstructed point combinations in the Saam tradition. We will identify clinical situations for modifying point combinations to match patient presentations more exactly. We will then explore the strategies the Saam tradition employs for points along the Ren and Du Mai trajectories. \nThroughout the class students will be asked to critically evaluate case studies presented by the instructor that highlight these new concepts. In addition\, fundamental Saam tradition principles will be more clearly demonstrated through student presented case studies. \nThe overall goal for this class is to implement these deeper aspects of the Saam tradition more efficiently into your clinical practice. \n*Introduction to Saam Acupuncture and Bilateral Combinations and Draining Strategies are required before enrolling in this class. \n\n5 Weeks Course\nMeets Thursdays from 4 – 7pm EST\nMarch 23 – April 20\n15 CEUs / PDAs

SUMMARY:Pulse Diagnosis - is it worth the effort? Part 3
DESCRIPTION:Is it worth the effort to learn and integrate pulse diagnosis in your diagnostic toolbox? Of course I think it is. In the beginning of my own journey\, I got bits and pieces from the pulse I could use but to be honest\, it wasn’t that much. Slowly I found the pulse more and more beneficial to use\, and now I rely heavily on the pulse to inform my diagnosis. \nShen-Hammer Pulse System\nIt is honestly very easy to get overloaded by information from the pulse and even with how the system is taught. So how can we get started without losing faith? \nJoin me to explore some key concepts as an introduction to pulse diagnosis – and maybe you will be inspired to join the seminar afterwards. \nPart 1-3; 3 times 1 hour introduction to get inspired\, you are welcome each time\, and different aspects will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Female Longing in Chinese Medicine
DESCRIPTION:There is a long but thin thread in Chinese medicine on manless women (to use Hsiao-wen Cheng’s phrase). This thread runs through two millennia of history. Nuns\, widows\, palace maidens\, temple maidens\, and other unmarried women of reproductive age were considered at risk for certain types of disorders. The earliest reference is about a palace maiden in Historical Records (Shǐ Jì) by Sīmǎ Qiān. Later doctors added more detail for diagnosis and treatment. \nWas this simply the inability of (male) doctors to imagine a woman being happy on her own? Or could some of this be useful for women who long for a partner today? Can this apply to other genders? Can it apply to people who are not heterosexual? These translations raise many questions. Please join the discussion.

SUMMARY:Seasonal Alignment Discussion - Awakening of Insects into Spring Equinox
DESCRIPTION:The month of March aligns us with mid Spring. As thunder rumbles to alert the insects to rise up from beneath the surface\, it is a reminder for all beings to shake the soil and create space for sprouting. Let’s loosen up and emerge! \nJoin us for our monthly discussions\, as we explore our experiences with the seasonal nodes and practice being in relationship with time and space. Let’s learn together and share the many ways to apply this guidance into our personal and/or clinical practice. Our topics will center around the energetic timing and movement of each period\, treatment application\, herbs/teas\, food therapy\, daoyin\, spinal meditation and qigong exercises specific to each node/solar term.
