Description:
This course is an extraordinary opportunity for practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine, especially those interested in practicing with Classical formulas, to crown their skills with the pinnacle of diagnostic accuracy, pulse. Nadine has studied, practiced and taught this system of pulse diagnosis for 16 years. Nadine, in working with this system passed down from Dr. Tian Heming, has honed her practice and teaching to make it her own. Practitioners will have the chance to work with Nadine throughout the entire autumn and winter into spring, slowly learning the didactic portion of these teachings so as to deeply integrate them. She will teach the pulse theory, the qualities of pulses and the pulses based on the six conformations. This is all based on the classics and on the writings on pulse by Zhang Zhongjing.
This online portion includes lectures and discussion forums for answering your questions as we go along. Class will meet once every six weeks (approximately). It will prepare students for the summer retreat, July 18-22, 2022 during which we take a deep dive: Nadine will teach the pulse for virtually all of the Shanghan Zabing Lun formulas as well as making sure every student develops the skill to feel these pulses.
The online portion is required for those who want to attend next summer’s retreat.
If you have had the experience of diagnosing a patient and then feeling the pulses and then thinking “ah yes! Now I know exactly what to do,” and then doing it with remarkable and direct results….you will want more of that experience. If you haven’t had that experience, it’s a wonderful feeling. We welcome you to this remarkable opportunity to study with a master.

Description:
During this retreat you will learn Shang Han Za Bing Lun theory based on the Huangdi Neijing, Han dynasty knowledge. This knowledge becomes profoundly practical through knowing the pulse/formula correspondences based on the combined knowledge of these texts.
Why is this system clinically so effective for both acute and chronic complex illnesses that we often see in our clinics?
Nadine Zäch will give participants the palpatory skill along with the pulse/formula correspondences relevant to actual practice in this upcoming retreat. Based on her over 15 years of experience in this system, she will explain each of the 6 conformations/liu Qi the diagnostics based on pulse and symptoms of the patient, which have been provided by the classical texts of Shang Han Za Bing Lun. Step by step she will walk through Taiyang-, Yangming-, Shaoyang-, Taiyin-, Shaoyin- and Jueyin-stages/liu Qi. She will explain the structure of prescriptions and their architecture of single herbs in a classical context and the associated pulses to each prescription. Her training and clinical experience is based on a long Shang Han Za Bing Lun pulse tradition as well as from the pulse chapters themselves. Participants will be steeped in the understanding of physiology and therefore pathology and the applications of the most important prescriptions along the clinical diagnostics of pulse and symptoms. The participant will learn in theory and practice a congruent system, that leads from symptoms and pulses to the right treatment/formula.
Goal:
The goal is that through this retreat the participant will develop a deeper understanding of classical Patho/Physiology and better diagnostic skills to treat patients more effectively with Shang Han Za Bing Lun formulas. Since we practice pulse-taking with each other, the goal is that everyone in the class has had any other participant in the class under his/her fingers by the end of the retreat.
Requirements:
There are no educational requirement to take this course. You can join this course regardless of your level as a Chinese Medicine Practitioner. It will be enjoyable for both beginners and very advanced practitioners. The only thing you need is interest in Classical Chinese Medicine. But it makes it easier for you to follow if you already have had contact with Chinese Herbal Medicine. Since the formula- and single herb names will be lectured in Chinese.
Completion of the Online Didactic Course is required for all participants
